HR screen mock interview: get through the first filter

The recruiter screen is the round people take least seriously and fail most often. It doesn't test what you can do. It decides one thing: does your resume hold up, and do you fit this role?

MockLive's HR interviewer works from the resume you upload and the job description you paste. It doesn't comment on your answers — it only checks facts. When the dates and the numbers don't line up, it asks the same thing again from another angle.

Language note: the practice room's on-screen controls are currently in Chinese. Under 高级设置 (Advanced settings), set the interview language to English — the interviewer then asks, follows up and writes your report in English.

What this round decides

Whether you reach the next round. The recruiter isn't judging your skills; they are ruling out risk — padding on the resume, a reason for leaving that doesn't add up, salary or timing that won't work. Fail here and nobody further down ever sees how good you are.

The four things this interviewer checks

Resume authenticity

Is the timeline continuous, are the jobs what you say they were, and can you explain how each number on your resume was measured? Gaps always get asked about.

Motivation

Why you left your last job and why this company. Not being able to say “why us” hurts more than a wrong answer.

Stability and availability

Your current pay structure and expectations, other offers, how soon you can start, and whether the location and travel work for you.

Communication

Can you finish a clear self-introduction in two minutes, and do your answers address the question that was asked?

How the session runs

  1. 1

    Opening

You give a self-introduction, kept to about two minutes.

  2. 2

    Resume drill

The interviewer checks your timeline, your employment history and whether the numbers on your resume hold up.

  3. 3

    Competency

Reasons for leaving, salary expectations, start date and the working arrangements you can accept.

  4. 4

    Pressure

The interviewer presses on any reason for leaving or date that contradicts what you said earlier, to see whether your story holds together.

  5. 5

    Candidate questions

The floor is yours — and what you ask is rated in the report too.

How it follows up

How it asks (examples, not a question bank)

I see a period on your resume with nothing listed. Can you tell me what you were doing then?
The reason you just gave for leaving doesn't match the dates on your resume. Can you go through it again?

Questions

Is it worth practising an HR screen?

Yes, and it's the cheapest round to fix. The topics are predictable — timeline, reasons for leaving, salary, start date — but your answers have to stay consistent. Changing your story under a follow-up is the most common way out of this round, and you only find that out by answering out loud.

What does the HR interviewer ask if I have no gaps?

It checks how the numbers on your resume were measured, the dates of each role, and whether your motivation and salary expectations fit together. The questions come from your own resume, so no two candidates get the same session.

Can I practise without uploading a resume?

Yes — the job description is required, the resume is optional. But this round is mostly about checking your resume, so without one the interviewer can only ask general questions from the job description.
