A real mock interview report, walked through in English

This is the report MockLive produced at the end of one real session with the hiring-manager interviewer. It is shown exactly as generated — including a harsh verdict — so you can see what you get before you practise.

The session was held in Chinese, so every quote below is shown in the original Chinese, exactly as it appears in the report, with an English translation underneath. The quotes are not paraphrased: the report is only accepted if each quote is an exact fragment of the transcript.

Disclosure: the answers in this session are text-to-speech test material, not a real person's recording; the role and work history are demo data. The criticisms are model output and have not been independently verified.

Interviewer: hiring manager (first-round interview with your future manager)

The verdict

Every report ends in one of three hiring verdicts — Hire, Borderline or No-hire risk — instead of a score out of ten. This session received the lowest one.

Evidence: the candidate's exact words

Each piece of evidence is a verbatim quote tied to one dimension, with the answer's audio to replay. The audio is in Chinese and plays the full answer the quote comes from.

Dimension: Delivery and pacing

English translation

“Let me go through it by the main project line. For the past few years I've been hands-on across everything from algorithms to the full stack. The most recent complete loop was a content-generation engine — model integration, routing and fault tolerance, through to the front-end experience, all delivered. Which part would you like to dig into first? I'll expand on it.”

Dimension: Role fit

English translation

“As I see it, the enterprise knowledge base and “ops cultivation” scenarios in the JD match my experience.”

“Ops cultivation” (运维栽培) is what the candidate said in place of “ops disaster recovery” (运维灾备), the term in the job description — the report calls this out below.

Dimension: Content credibility

English translation

“On the vulnerability-detection project we labelled more than 60,000 samples and fine-tuned a large model with LoRA, cutting the static-analysis false-positive rate from 65% to 25%. We also combined AST and CFG graph structures for code auditing, with multi-task instruction tuning plus chain-of-thought, and reached 98% accuracy in internal testing.”

Dimension: Structure

English translation

“At AtlasNova, I built multi-platform OAuth integration, and moved authentication from JWTs in local storage to HTTP-only cookies to prevent XSS.”

Question-by-question feedback

For each question: what was asked, what the candidate actually said, what was wrong with it, and a better way to answer.

Question

Please introduce yourself, and describe your most relevant hands-on experience for this role's focus on an enterprise knowledge base and disaster-recovery operations.

English translation

“As I see it, the enterprise knowledge base and “ops cultivation” scenarios in the JD match my experience. I've shipped RAG, and I've done on-premises deployments. At two companies I took AI capabilities from zero to launch, so delivering large models for “ops cultivation” here is a pace I know well.”

The problem

The candidate shows a serious lack of understanding of the core business scenario, misreading “ops disaster recovery” as “ops cultivation”, and stays at slogan-level claims without giving any concrete approach to the core steps — knowledge-base chunking, retrieval, evaluation or on-premises deployment.

A better answer

First get the business right. Then, for data-centre disaster recovery and operations inspection, state the concrete engineering work and metrics from your on-premises RAG pipeline — for example document splitting and cleaning, hybrid vector and full-text retrieval, and long-context handling on self-hosted open-source models.

Question

Please go into a representative result you delivered in model fine-tuning or quality optimisation, and the metrics used to evaluate it.

The problem

The figures given (98% test accuracy for code auditing) are far from what is realistic in industry, with no description of how the evaluation set was built, no baseline comparison and no analysis of real failure cases — clear signs of resume padding and buzzword stacking.

A better answer

State plainly how large the evaluation set was, how the benchmark was set up and which metrics you used (precision, recall, F1), and walk through what actually went wrong on long-tail vulnerabilities or hallucinations and how you guarded against it — instead of quoting an unrealistically high accuracy figure.

The interviewer's note

Overall, the candidate does not meet the bar for a senior AI application engineer; verdict: reject (risk). They mechanically repeated the same stock passage as many as five times, which made the conversation very unnatural, and said “ops cultivation” for the core business term “ops disaster recovery”, showing a lack of basic respect for, and preparation on, the target business and job description. The technical account is a typical case of claiming everything and stacking terms (claiming end-to-end ownership of everything from front-end React and OAuth to LoRA and AST/CFG), while the “98% accuracy” quoted for fine-tuned code auditing is badly distorted, so engineering depth and the authenticity of the resume are in doubt. Current technical depth and reliability do not match this team's need to take enterprise on-premises AI from zero to one.

Next actions (as written in this report)

  • End the interview process, record the rejection in the hiring system and archive it.
  • Send the candidate a standard rejection letter; do not refer them to other engineering roles.

Questions the candidate did not answer

  • Specific metrics and pipeline design for document splitting, reranking and recall evaluation in an enterprise knowledge base.
  • Real hands-on lessons from quantising on-premises large models, planning GPU memory and deploying offline.
