How to Prepare for an AI Interview (When an AI Is Your Interviewer)

Your first interview is with an AI. Find out what it will ask you to do, which scoring claims are actually documented, and what you can practise beforehand.

Direct answer

First identify the format: recorded video, live voice AI, text/chat, or a game-based assessment. They need different preparation.

Prepare short, specific first-person examples tied to the job requirements. HireVue says its AI-scored video assessments evaluate answer transcripts against role competencies [1]; that is not a rule for every vendor.

Rehearse aloud for spoken formats, including follow-ups for a live conversation: micro1 describes Zara's questions branching in real time [2].

Which format is it, and what does the vendor say it evaluates?

These are product-specific statements, not independently validated performance claims. Quoted fragments below come from the linked sources, read on 27 October 2026. Ask the recruiter which product and assessment are enabled.

FormatHow it worksVendor statement and sourceWhat to prepare
One-way recorded videoAnswer prompts on camera; no live conversational partner.HireVue: “transcript”; excludes visual signals and vocal tone for AI-scored video assessments. [1], 2026-10-27.One true example per requirement, within the employer's answer limit; check retakes.
Live voice AISpoken exchanges; Zara's questions branch as the conversation unfolds.micro1: “skills report”; describes technical and soft-skill rubrics, not a universal pass formula. [2], 2026-10-27.Explain your own actions, evidence and trade-offs; rehearse unexpected follow-ups.
Text/chatGupy describes Smart Vagas pre-interviews through WhatsApp text.Gupy: “pré-entrevistas” (pre-interviews). This page describes the format, not a scoring formula. [3], 2026-10-27.Practise concise written examples. Ask what is assessed; do not infer scoring from the channel.
Game-based assessmentComplete interactive tasks instead of a spoken interview.HireVue: “memory”, among other cognitive abilities; job criteria guide evaluation. [4], 2026-10-27.Read the official instructions and use any offered sample tasks; an answer script will not simulate the game.

A vendor name alone does not identify the format. A video recording can accompany a live conversation, and a recruitment platform can combine several stages. Match your rehearsal to the actual invitation.

Can you rehearse it, and with what?

Live voice AIAsk a friend to probe each claim, or try ChatGPT Voice for spoken Q&A within its available limits. Recording yourself on a phone also costs nothing.Good: close rehearsal, not a replica. Resume + JD follow-ups; personas add pressure and candidate-question stages a screener may not have.
One-way videoRecord answers on your phone's camera with the stated time limit.Partial: audio only, no camera, no preparation countdown or employer retake rule. A visible timer and a three-minute audio-answer cap are present.

Your rights, and what to ask the recruiter before the AI interview

This is a US jurisdiction-specific example, not legal advice or a worldwide rule. Your location, the job location and the tool's use matter. Ask the same practical questions wherever you apply.

New York City: for covered AEDT use, NYC-resident candidates must receive notice 10 business days before use, including the qualifications or characteristics assessed and accommodation-request instructions [5]. Covered employers must have a recent independent bias audit and publish its results summary [6]. Both sources read 2026-10-27.

Ask how to request a reasonable accommodation or an alternative process. An instruction to ask is not a guarantee that a human interview is available. Confirm the applicable policy with the recruiter before the deadline.

  1. Which vendor, product and format will I face?
  2. How long can I answer, and is there preparation time?
  3. Are retakes allowed, and what happens after a connection failure?
  4. May I use notes?
  5. How do I request accommodations or an alternative process?
  6. Does a person review my answers or only a score? Can I raise a transcription error?
  7. What is stored, who receives it, and how do I request deletion?

Worked example: make the job requirement visible in your answer

Illustrative: an invented job requirement and answer, not a real candidate, vendor score or MockLive result. Replace these details with your own experience.

Job requirement

Resolve customer complaints and coordinate with operations.

Weak answer

I am customer-focused and a great communicator. We always deliver excellent service.

Why it fails

Our diagnosis: neither a transcript-based scorer nor a human can identify your action, the complaint or the outcome. Repeating the job's keywords supplies no evidence of doing the work.

Rewrite

A customer reported a missing delivery. I checked the dispatch record, found that the address label was incomplete, and asked operations to confirm a new delivery slot. I explained the next steps to the customer and called back after delivery. They confirmed receipt. My colleague arranged the courier; I handled the investigation and customer updates. Be ready to explain how you checked the record and what you would do if the courier refused.

A short technology and environment check

Record and replay one sentence to check the microphone in a quiet room.

Test browser microphone permissions, and camera access if the invitation requires video.

Use the intended device and connection; keep the recruiter or support contact ready if the session fails.

Practising with MockLive

Disclosure: MockLive is our product. It uses your resume and JD for a spoken interview with follow-ups. It is a good rehearsal for live voice AI and only a partial one for recorded video: audio only, no camera or vendor countdown/retake simulation; no chat or games. Its personas include pressure and candidate-question stages. The report quotes your transcript; speech recognition can mishear you, so check the recording. MockLive's verdict is its own practice assessment, not an employer or vendor score.

Interviews may be temporarily paused. Opening setup does not promise a session can run. First interview free — one scored mock, no card; availability still applies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pass an AI interview?

There is no guaranteed method. Identify the format, give truthful job-relevant examples, and practise explaining your contribution. Do not stuff keywords or have a copilot supply answers during the real assessment.

What should I expect in an AI interview?

A recording, a live spoken exchange, a written chat or tasks may be involved. Ask about timing and retries before you open the assessment. The table separates the formats.

Does a human see my answers?

Do not assume every answer receives human review. Ask whether the recruiter sees recordings, transcripts, scores or a shortlist, and how to request a review.

Are AI interviews a red flag?

The format alone does not settle that. Verify the invitation with the employer. Unclear data use, unexplained scoring or no way to raise an accessibility issue are reasons to ask questions before proceeding.

Can I practise for an AI interview for free?

Yes: record yourself on a phone or ask a friend to run follow-ups. ChatGPT Voice is another spoken Q&A route; check its current limits. MockLive: first interview free — one scored mock, no card; interviews may be paused.
